The global women’s wellness products market was valued at $289.8 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach $312 billion in 2026, according to Grand View Research, a market research and consulting firm. The firm projects the market will reach $549.3 billion by 2033, representing an 8.4% compound annual growth rate. Its research points to growing interest in preventive health, hormonal and reproductive health, functional foods and beverages, personalized nutrition and healthy aging as factors driving the market.


The way women find information about those products has changed, too. Grand View Research identifies social media, influencer marketing, e-commerce and personalized recommendations as factors accelerating online sales of women's wellness products. That means women are increasingly encountering advice about creatine, protein powders, electrolyte mixes, collagen, magnesium and other supplements outside of a doctor's office or nutrition consultation.


McKinsey & Co., a global management consulting firm, found a similar expansion in the broader wellness economy. Its 2025 Future of Wellness survey included more than 9,000 consumers in China, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States. McKinsey estimated U.S. wellness spending at more than $500 billion annually, growing 4% to 5% each year, and identified functional nutrition and healthy aging among the wellness categories attracting increased consumer and investor interest.



Navigating midlife equestrian nutrition and finding effective supplements for female riders over 40 becomes essential as body composition, hormone levels, and energy needs evolve. Applying evidence-based sports nutrition for equestrians allows riders to cut through marketing noise and choose performance supplements for women that genuinely support health and riding performance in the saddle.


Riding requires strength, balance, coordination, cardiovascular capacity and concentration. Maintaining those abilities through the 40s, 50s and beyond requires more than time in the saddle. Muscle and bone health become increasingly important, while the transition through perimenopause and menopause brings changes in hormones, body composition and fluid regulation.


For women riding through midlife, the issue is less about collecting supplements and more about determining which ones have enough evidence to be useful. The goal is to determine which supplements, if any, provide a meaningful benefit alongside adequate food, exercise and recovery.

The Protein Question for Equestrian Performance

The International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN), which publishes evidence-based position stands on sports nutrition, addressed the nutritional considerations of female athletes in a 2023 position stand. The review specifically notes that female athletes have nutritional considerations that can vary across the menstrual cycle and across life stages.


For female athletes, ISSN recommends approximately 1.4 to 2.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day, with protein distributed throughout the day. For a 140- to 150-pound woman, that is approximately 90 to 150 grams of protein per day. The organization recommends that peri- and postmenopausal athletes aim toward the upper end of the range.


That recommendation is connected to the challenge of maintaining muscle as women age. Researchers use the term anabolic resistance to describe a reduced muscle response to anabolic signals, including dietary amino acids and exercise, that can occur with aging. Research specifically examining menopause is still developing, and it is difficult to separate the effects of menopause from normal aging. However, studies have found evidence of altered muscle protein metabolism in postmenopausal women.


Adequate protein and resistance exercise become increasingly important for maintaining muscle as women age. For an equestrian, that has consequences beyond the gym. Muscle contributes to the strength required to mount and dismount, control the body in the saddle, handle a horse on the ground and maintain physical independence as the years go on.


Stuart Phillips, Ph.D., a professor at McMaster University whose research has focused extensively on skeletal muscle, protein metabolism and exercise, discussed the relationship between protein and resistance training in a FoundMyFitness interview. His point was that protein works in addition to exercise rather than instead of it.

“The protein effect is a thin layer on top.”

Phillips was referring to research showing that resistance training is the major stimulus for increases in muscle size and strength, with adequate protein providing additional support.


In other words, a protein shake cannot replace progressive strength training, and eating more protein does not automatically produce more muscle.

Creatine: Useful, but Not Magic

Creatine monohydrate has one of the stronger evidence bases among sports supplements. The ISSN female-athlete position stand identifies creatine, along with caffeine and iron, as supplements with substantial evidence for use in female athletes and recommends 3 to 5 grams of creatine per day for general supplementation.


Creatine increases the availability of phosphocreatine in muscle, helping the body rapidly regenerate adenosine triphosphate during short-duration, high-intensity activity. Resistance training combined with creatine supplementation can support gains in strength and lean mass. Research involving women is growing, but the female-specific evidence base remains considerably smaller than the literature in men.


Abbie Smith-Ryan, Ph.D., an exercise physiologist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and director of its Applied Physiology Laboratory, researches exercise, nutrition, body composition and women's health, with particular attention to the perimenopausal and postmenopausal transition. In a January 2026 episode of The Peter Attia Drive, she discussed the growing research on creatine in women.

“I think creatine is great and there’s a lot of benefit, but that doesn’t mean it’s magic.”

Smith-Ryan also discussed ongoing research involving creatine and perimenopausal women during the interview.


Creatine works best as an addition to a larger training and nutrition program, not as a substitute for either. It can also increase total body water and body weight. The increase in body weight is not an increase in body fat, although individual responses vary. Some people experience an initial increase in body weight from additional water stored with creatine in muscle. The amount varies between individuals.


Electrolytes Are Not a Requirement for Every Ride

Electrolytes have become one of the most aggressively marketed categories in sports nutrition, but the need for supplementation depends heavily on the activity and environment.



Lindsay B. Baker, Ph.D., a researcher with the Gatorade Sports Science Institute who specializes in hydration, sweating and thermoregulation, reviewed the research on hydration in physically active women in a 2023 Sports Science Exchange article. She notes that sweat rate and sodium losses vary considerably among individual women and that factors including body size, workload, environmental conditions and exercise intensity affect fluid needs.


Baker's practical recommendation is straightforward:

“Hydration strategies should be tailored to the individual based on the athlete’s sweat losses and exercise/environmental conditions.”

Needs can look very different from one ride to the next.


A 45-minute arena ride in moderate temperatures is not physiologically equivalent to several hours of trail riding in summer heat, a cross-country schooling session or a full day of competition.


Electrolytes can be useful when substantial sweat losses occur, particularly during prolonged exercise and in hot conditions. But more is not automatically better. Baker also cautions against gaining body mass from excessive fluid intake, and the ISSN female-athlete position stand notes that women can have increased susceptibility to hyponatremia under certain hormonal and environmental conditions.


Electrolyte use should depend on the ride, weather, individual sweat losses and duration rather than becoming an automatic addition to every bottle of water.

The Rest Requires a Reason

The supplement industry is large enough that almost any symptom or performance goal can be paired with a product. That does not mean every product belongs in a daily routine. And, not every product marketed for active women has a place in a daily routine.


Iron deserves particular attention in female athletes because iron deficiency is common, but supplementation should follow an assessment of dietary intake, risk factors and, when appropriate, laboratory testing. Taking iron simply because it is marketed toward active women is not a sound substitute for determining whether a deficiency exists.


Vitamin D and calcium also have legitimate roles in bone health, but whether supplementation is appropriate depends on dietary intake, individual status and medical circumstances. Caffeine has substantial evidence for improving certain aspects of exercise performance, although its effects and tolerability vary among individuals.


For women riding well into midlife and after, the basics matter most: adequate energy intake, sufficient protein, resistance training, cardiovascular exercise, hydration, sleep and a diet that supplies the vitamins and minerals the body needs.


Supplements can fill specific gaps or provide a measurable performance benefit. They are not a substitute for those fundamentals. For an equestrian who wants to keep riding for decades, those fundamentals provide the foundation for maintaining strength, physical capacity and recovery.
