Reimagining Equestrian Media:
The Horse Review Story

The Horse Review began its life in 1992 as Mid-South Horse Review, founded by Don Dowdle, with the goal of serving as a dedicated regional equestrian publication for the Mid-South horse community. From its earliest days, the magazine focused on accessible, community-centered coverage of local horse sport: rodeo, western , hunters, jumpers, foxhunting, trail riding, carriage driving and regional show circuits while also providing a consistent platform for equine businesses and service providers across the region.
As the publication grew, ownership later transitioned to Tommy and Nancy Brannon, who carried the magazine through a long period of stability, success and regional recognition. Under their leadership, Mid-South Horse Review strengthened its presence as a trusted voice in the equestrian community, continuing its print tradition while maintaining strong ties to riders, trainers, veterinarians, and equine industry advertisers throughout the Mid-South.
In 2022, the publication entered a new era when it was acquired by Lauren Abbott under Ford Abbott Media, LLC. This ownership change marked a strategic shift in both vision and scope. While preserving the publication’s regional roots and loyal readership base, the new direction expanded its editorial focus beyond traditional horse show coverage to include the evolving needs of the modern equestrian; particularly the health, performance, and longevity of the rider.
Between 2022 and 2024, the magazine underwent a period of transformation in both content, design and identity, gradually integrating new topics beyond mid-south regional show coverage and features. In 2024, the publication was officially rebranded as The Horse Review, reflecting its expanded mission and modern editorial direction. The rebrand signaled a shift from a regional horse industry magazine to a broader, national equestrian multi-media platform centered on the horse-and-rider system as a whole, with a particular emphasis on the rider as an athlete.
Today, The Horse Review, under Ford Abbott Media, LLC, a woman-owned business, continues that evolution; bridging sport, science, and storytelling to support the modern equestrian, with a focus on rider health, longevity, and performance in partnership with the horse.
The Horse Review exists to elevate the modern equestrian through a horse-first lens that integrates sport, science, and storytelling.
Our mission is to inform, inspire, and support the modern equestrian woman by advancing education and conversation around brain health, longevity, fitness, mobility, wellness, and performance in and out of the saddle. We believe the rider is an athlete whose physical and cognitive well-being directly shapes the quality of horsemanship and the welfare of the horse.
Every story we tell is grounded in the principle that the horse comes first. From training and veterinary science to rider biomechanics and nervous system health, we are committed to content that strengthens both sides of the partnership—while never losing sight of the horse as the center of the discipline.
We exist to support lifelong riding through better bodies, clearer minds, and deeper understanding—because better riders create better lives for their horses.
