THE STORY BEHIND OUR MISSION

Lauren Abbott

Publisher & Editor-in-Chief. Neuroscience Coach. Equestrian. Artist. Mother. Wife. Midlife Optimist.

In 2022, I founded Ford Abbott Media, LLC and purchased The Horse Review, a 34 year-old publication, to unite my lifelong love of horses with more than 20 years of journalism experience. Over the last decade, I have also walked a deeply personal path as a caregiver to my parents through catastrophic illness and loss. My mother suffered a devastating brain stem stroke that left her with significant physical disability and chronic illness, while my father’s decline from dementia rapidly escalated during the same period. In 2025 he too suffered a brain stem stroke and passed away the following month. Experiencing their illnesses, caregiving, and grief profoundly shaped my understanding of resilience, aging, and brain health.

My mother had given up riding when I was a very small child. She set aside her own love of horses in the midst of a mother's responsibilities. That early experience, combined with later caregiving, made me acutely aware of how easily women lose connection to the things that define them while navigating family, work, health, and aging. This ultimately led me to pursue certification in neuroscience coaching, with a focus on helping women move through caregiving, hormonal transitions, chronic illness, stress, grief, and the emotional complexity of midlife.

At The Horse Review, our focus is on the rider. We explore the science of our horse-human connection and share research and insight on how horses support our physical, emotional, and cognitive wellbeing—especially as we age. My mission is to be a voice and advocate for female equestrians over 35, helping women stay connected to their identity, their health, and their passion for horses through every stage of life. I hope you join our community!

"I have ridden my entire life.  I stopped riding two years ago when my horse passed.  I was 58 and figured, this is when old ladies hang it up. At 60, I  started BHRT.

The Horse Review has given me the power I need to return to the saddle. Thank you! 🐴🩷"

"I am a horse lover. I used to do therapeutic riding for my MS. I'm delighted as a health coach to find The Horse Review as a resource and add its shared research to my 'treatment bag of goodies.' Keep up the good work!"

Nikki P.

"I started back riding at age 55. It's always a challenge mentally and physically so I love reading The Horse Review's research on the benefits which gives me confirmation. I hope to continue for many more years. Thank you to The Horse Review for your support!"

"Thank you for this info, it is helpful and it sure is true! Thanks to everyone who has put time and energy into this 'new awakening'. I hope this information helps keep horses alive and present in our human communities. It would take pages to write how valuable horses are to our ecosystem but The Horse Review does it so well and in meaningful ways."
